This educational system is the first of its kind in the West African region of Africa. Do you know that this institution is the largest tertiary institution in Nigeria? Well, this is true, but only in terms of student numbers. Wow! Do you know what that means? It simply means that this platform is very popular among students in the nation of Nigeria.

Have you heard of the term distance learning? If you have heard of the term do you know what it really means or what it stands for? Distance learning simply leans the ability for a person to attend lessons and lectures without having to be in a classroom or any educational facility. With this system of learning, lecturers get to broadcast lessons online or on air. The presence of the student or the tutor is not required in a college or class setting.

Just as the favorite saying goes, ‘you can’t eat your cake and have it’. But do you know that you can actually eat your cake and have it by studying in this institution? The national open university of Nigeria initially was established on 22 July 1983. It was then known as the springboard for open distance learning in Nigeria.

On April 25th, 1984, the institution was suspended by the government. It was until later on April 12th, 2001 that it was resuscitated by then-president of Nigeria, gen Olusegun Obasanjo.

After the resurrection of the institution, the number of students enrolled was 32,400. And in 2011, the institution had about 57, 759 students nationwide. The school has its headquarters in Jabi Abuja. Before then the school had its headquarters in Victoria Island Lagos. The National Open University of Nigeria has over 75 study centers throughout the country. Also, it offers 50 programs and 750 courses in total.

And just as I have said, this institution does not lecture its students in normal classrooms as the majority of their activities are being done online. There are some centers that do offer lectures for their students in classrooms. For example, the study center in Lagos provides lectures to all its law students.

National Open University Of Nigeria Exams

Just like every other tertiary institution, this very institution offers exams to its students. But before the exams, there is the TMA. The TMA stands for tutor-marked assessment. There are 3 tutor-marked assessments in a semester. After the three TMAs, exams will proceed. The examinations of the national Open University is unique.

The exams in the institution are written in two formats. There are the e-exams and the POP, en on paper exams. Students in their first and second year in the institution will have the e-exams while those in their third year and above will have their exams in pen on paper format. There are two semesters in a session meaning there are two final exams in a session. Time tables are usually announced and published a month before exams.

Open University Application Form

Before you can be enrolled in this institution you will need to apply for admission and this is what the Open University application form is all about. But before you can get the application form, there are requirements and you will need to have everything in place stipulated in the requirements before you can apply. Some of the admission requirements are;

Undergraduate Programmes

  • You must have a minimum of 5 O-level credits and must be including of English language and mathematics.
  • After selecting a program, you might find additional requirements.

Postgraduate Programmes

  • You must meet all the matriculation requirements of at least 5 credit passes including mathematics and English language. Some programs may accept a pass in mathematics.
  • For postgraduate programs, you must possess a minimum of pass in a bachelor’s degree in any discipline of your choice from a recognized university or a higher national diploma with a minimum of lower credit. And for legislative drafting, a candidate must be called to bar.
  • For the master’s degree program, a candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of second class lower in your relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  • In the matter of doctor of philosophy degree programs, as a candidate, you must possess a master’s degree in the relevant field of study from a recognized institution. You must also have a minimum score of not less than 60% or a CPGA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale.

To apply for admission to this institution, follow the steps below;

  • Go to nouonline.net.
  • Go to the menu bar and click on apply for admission.
  • Select a program, e.g., undergraduate or postgraduate.
  • On the left-hand side of the screen, go to choose faculty.
  • Select your preferred faculty on the next page.
  • Fill in the form displayed.
  • After filling the form, click below, so as to view the admission criteria for that course and faculty.
  • Next, click on Apply to proceed.
  • Put the Unique ID displayed into consideration.
  • Click on the continue button.
  • Select the bank branch as your payment type and click on pay.
  • Copy your RRR number and visit any bank to pay.
  • After payment, perform the first to third step all over again.
  • Next, go to continue after payment.
  • Enter your unique ID, RRR number, and program and click on proceed.
  • Fill in the form that follows. All the fields marked with a red star are compulsory.
  • After filling the form, click on submit.
  • Print your admission letter and visit the nearest study to you for screening.
